Day 13 12th July Coral Bay to Minilya Roadhouse 98 Km

Day 13    12th July    Coral Bay to Minilya Roadhouse   98km

Today is the beginning of 10 straight days of riding.  No more rest days until we reach Perth. Only 98km today but into head winds all day.  Arrived about lunch time which gave us all afternoon off.  Gordon's coffee machine got a run again. All very nice.

The ride crossed the Tropic of Capricorn about 50km back up the road.  Time for a photo.
Tropic of Capricorn.  Finally heading south.

Under the stars again to night out the back of the Minilya Roadhouse.  Calling us for tea.  Better go.

Day 12 11th July Coral Bay Rest Day

Day 12      Rest Day at Coral Bay

Riding is good fun but rest days are wonderful.  Coral Bay is pretty much a couple of very large caravan parks, small shopping centre and a very well appointed back packers facility.  The shopping centre did have a very nice bakery/coffee shop.  Our team left the coffee shop with a considerable profit for the two days.

We all stayed in the back packers.  Very nice. Real beds. Swimming pool. Dinner for the two nights at the local restaurant.

Cruise boat out to the reef

What better way to spend a day off than by a 6hr cruise on the reef.  Snorkelling, swimming with Manta Rays, whale watching and ......   Life is tough.

Some strange things come out of the sea sometimes.

Day 11 10th July Giralia Stn to Coral Bay

Day 11   10th July  Giralia Stn to Coral Bay     106km.

Today started with breakfast prepared in the old shearers kitchen whist someone keep the pet horse from eating everything from the food trailer.

Some of the more serious riders in our group actually shave their legs (please don't ask me to explain). A quick touch up was required for Nick and as we had shearing equipment handy this seemed the appropriate time.

The shorter days are not always the easier ones and this was no exception.  4 km back along the gravel obstacle course to reach the bitumen.

Gateway to Giralia Station and Bay

Then not too bad to morning tea but after morning tea we suffered.   Head wind for the last 60 km and slightly undulating road that felt like uphill all the way.   No protection from the wind as the few tree that had provided a little protection are now completely gone, replaced by low, rough grass and scattered ant hills.
Battling headwinds on a barren landscape

Coral Bay however, is another story.  Have to wait till tomorrow.

Days 7 to 10 of the Big Ride across Australia

Days 7 to 10     6th to  9th July of the Big Ride across Australia

It is now actually the end of day 10.     OK, I got lazy for a couple of days.  For all of you who rely on this blog (if any one at all) for your daily fix of adrenalin pumping action I am sorry for the delay.  Here is a catch up.

Day 7  Rest Day at Karratha.  0 km travelled (rest day after all).
Welcome rest day after 843km in the first six days.  Chance to do washing etc.  A bus trip around Dampier and Karratha area was organised to see the sites.   These included the Natural Gas Plant ( information station closed on Sat.), some aboriginal rock art, and a visit to the Red Dog statue/memorial/shrine what ever (In honour of the Dog about which the film was made).
Unusual rock hills around Dampier

Red Dog site

Monument to killed and injured workers during the construction of the gas plant.

Most of the afternoon taken up the shopping of the next 10 or so days out in the wilderness again.  Get some interesting looks from the checkout girls at Woolies when you have two trollies with nothing but 20 x 15lt water the first time through then 120 lt of milk and 30 packets of small Mars bars the second time through.

Small church service this night as we will be riding again tomorrow (Sunday),

Day 8  Karratha to Robe River Rest Area   150km

Not such a happy day today.  A small incident at the front of the pelleton cause a ripple which intencified as it travelled back down the line.  The out come was a touch of wheels and two rides on the ground.  Colin the first to fall suffered a broken collar bone and smashed shoulder blade.  He was driven back to Karratha to the hospital and has since been flown home to Sydney.  The second chap suffered some cuts to his leg and bruised ribs.  He has been able to keep riding but was some what sore for the first couple of days.  Every one has been considerable up set by the event and the rest of the days ride was somewhat subdued.

Camping under the stars again at the Robe River rest Area.  Unfortuneately no water in the river so no swim or showers.  Another great meal was enjoyed in the evening followed by a discussion about what had happened and why God should allow such things to happen along with all the other suffering in the world.  A profitable time for the group as a whole I think.

We will miss Colins chearful presence and wish him a speady recovery.

Had internet coverage at Robe River but was in no mode to blog.

Day 9  Robe River Rest Area to Nanutarra Roadhouse  120 km.

Only a shorter ride today though not an easy one.  Head winds and cross wind made the travelling difficult and 120 km was quite far enough.  Nanutarra Roadhouse is in the middle of no-where. No phone coverage hense no internet.  The road house provided a plentiful BBQ dinner and most of us washed it down with an ice cream (rather expensive one) from the road house shop.  Slept under the stars again.  Starting to get good at putting up the tent.

Graham's birthday today with the usual B4B things that go on for those unfortune enough to celebrate a birthday during a ride.  Such as having to ride with a half dozen balloon attatched to his helmet.  All good fun.

Graham cutting B/day cake at morning tea time

On the down side we lost a couple more riders today at least for the next couple of days.  Karen (who is recovering from considerable health issues and very serious surgery) and her husband George were driven to Carnarvon hospital, 700km round trip by Jim (ride leader and organiser).   Hopefully they will rejoin the team in a couple of days

Day 10  Nanutarra Roadhouse to Girarlia Station   157 km
Long day today but more enjoyable as the wind was more favourable, particularly in the morning tea to lunch stretch.  Jim arrived back from Carnarvon towards the end of the day.

The last 4km of todays ride was along a gravel, sandy, corrugated farm track into Giralia Station.  At least one of our better riders ate some dust on the ride in but nothing but pride hurt.  Certainly at test of bike skills as our fancy road bikes aren't designed for such rides.

Giralia Station used to be a 600 thousand acre sheep station but in recent year has been reduced to about 40 thousand acres, they have given up the sheep and planted tourists.  Looks to have been a good move and they do it well.  Us single men slepped in "donga's"  (Old construction workers accommodation).  The couples were given rooms in the homestead which were somewhat more everything.  Could have benefitted from having Robyn with me this night.  Must not complain though since at least we had real beds for a change.

A lovely meal was enjoyed on the veranda of the homestead, cooked and served by the staff.  Even cotton tablecloths.

Donga accommodation. Note the coffee machine on the table in the center.

Day 6 5th July 2013 Sherlock River Rest Area to Karratha

Well what can I say today to do justice to the tremendous time we have had again?  97 Km (shortest day so far) mostly down wind again achieving another 33km/hour average speed over the entire day.

Awoke in the dark this morning to ensure we would be in Karratha by 1.30 pm as we only had a short period of time when we could use the showers at a local school.  What a spectacular morning it was.  Sunrise over the Sherlock River.
Made it into Karratha before 11.30 due to the tailwind.  What a thrill it was to ride again today.

Next two nights in Karratha Baptist Church.   A modern and well equipped facility and more than adequate to house the 40+ people we have in the group.  Dinner tonight was again in a Mining facility.  Great choice of good food at a very reasonable price.  So much so that it has been decided to go back again tomorrow night.

Bus trip arranged around the Karratha/Dampier area tomorrow morning after a sleep in till 7am.

As we are in the "Red Dog" area (movie filmed here a few years ago) it is being screened in the hall at the moment.  I, instead am sitting out side in the cool of the late evening typing up this post.  Bit warm inside for me.  Much more pleasant out here.

Day 5 4th July 2013 South Hedland to Sherlock River Rest Area.

Day 5   4th July 2013  South Hedland to Sherlock River Rest Area.        135km

Another wonderful day of cycling followed by a refreshing swim in the Sherlock River.

As we left South Hedland the traffic was heavy with road trains and other traffic.  Fortunately the road trains turned down the inland highway leaving only the grey nomads and other smaller road trains.

Early on the ride was a little more difficult today as the wind blew across from our left.  However as the day continued the road turned to the west and the wind again blew from behind.

We saw our first range of hills today.  A welcome change from the relentless flat plains and low scrub of the first four days.
First real line of hills since leaving Broome five days ago

Sleeping under the stars again on the bank of Sherlock River. As I type this up I can smell dinner cooking on the BBQ.  All is well and all are having a terrific time.  There are a few with rather sore rear ends but other wise no bad fall from bikes.  Spirits are still high.

Camping on the banks of the Sherlock River.

Dinner time now..... .
Short day tomorrow. Only 98 Km then a rest day in Karratha.  Looking forward to that and a chance to get the washing done.

Day 4 3rd July 2013 Pardoo Road House to South Hedland

Day 4  3rd July 2013 Pardoo Road House to South Hedland   149km

Another wonderful day of riding.  Good tail wind in the latter parts after a still and glorious morning.

The country side hasn't changed much in the 610km that we have travelled so far.
Local county side

More local country side
Still more country side

There have been some more interesting rock formations and the like as we approached South Hedland.

We are staying a Youth Centre/sports complex tonight.  They certainly have spent some money on this place.   All very five star.  Also didn't have to put up the tent.

Road traffic is starting to get a bit heavier as we enter the mining area of WA.

This is one of the many local road hazards.  Would make a great wheat carting truck.  Wonder if I could get it registered in NSW.

Off to tea in a min.  Also have to do devotions tonight.

.........................................

Back from tea now.  How can I explain what just happened.  Let me try.  Dinner was at a Fly in/fly out mining complex.  I thought they spent a lot of money on the Youth Centre.  Well they didn't spare the money on the miners complex either.  Imagine being in a large Shopping Mall Food Court,  restaurant quality food, all you can eat from any stall and unlimited seconds and thirds (and for some fourths).  Never seen so many grown men and women (all B4B riders) walking around with grins on their faces.  Some one described it as "only on a cruise ship".  All  B4B rides in the future will be going through Port Hedland.   Expecting the ride tomorrow will be much slower.

Dinner venue tonight.

Camping again tomorrow night
